For 125 years, British-built submarines have helped shape naval warfare, technological innovation and the nation’s defences.

From the first boats constructed at the dawn of the 20th century to today’s cutting-edge nuclear-powered fleet, generations of engineers, designers and submariners have pushed the boundaries of what is possible beneath the waves.

It was a privilege to spend time with the commander of the UK’s newest submarine, meet a director leading those building them and listen to the recollections of a friend who has spent a lifetime working with ‘the silent service.’

The fact the first ever submarine still exists - and the batteries it was equipped with were still serviceable, 125 years later - was amazing.
