Focus on Fostering podcast

Podcasting is an ideal way to tell the kind of stories where video is maybe too intrusive.

Years ago, I recorded a short series for a radio programme where carers and those involved in fostering spoke candidly about their experiences.

I approached Cumberland Council last year when I heard about the launch of a new way of fostering known as Mockingbird.

The model of care creates a community of support by bringing together foster families into a ‘constellation’, led by a dedicated hub carer and supported by a liaison worker. It’s all about building stronger, more connected networks around children and carers — like an extended family.

The recording took place in the home of the pioneering hub carers in south Cumbria and, as you will hear, we had fun exploring the issues and challenges they faced. I loved talking to them and while ‘authentic’ is an over-used phrase, I think this truly is.

Claire Crisp from the council got in touch and we’ve created a podcast series which shines a light on fostering in Cumbria. Each episode will explore the real experiences behind fostering — from the day-to-day realities to the lifelong impact carers make. Whether already a carer, thinking about fostering, or work in children’s services, the podcast will offer honest conversations, expert insights, and - we hope - stories that inspire.

The first episode went out last week as part of Fostering Fortnight and ‘Focus on Fostering’ has proved popular.

As Claire said:” 🎙 A big thank you to Nigel Thompson MCIPR Chart.PR who helped us create our new podcast dedicated to foster carers — giving a voice to those who care so deeply, yet are so often unheard.

This isn’t just about sharing stories — it’s about shining a light on the realities of fostering to spark real conversations.

If you’re a carer, have been touched by fostering, or simply want to understand more — this is for you.”
